Last week I had the opportunity to watch \u201cTHE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS: CITY OF BONES<\/strong><\/em>\u201d at MBO tHe Spring, Kuching. It was a nice experience. Nothing heavy or serious. Boy meets girl weaved with same-sex attraction. A love triangle which exists between the protagonist, Clary, with Simon and Jace draws a parallel love triangle like Twilight\u2019s. (I thank the people seated behind me for drawing that conclusion.)<\/p>\n

When I realised the movie was based on a series of books, I immediately got hold of them. In the past week, I read Book One to Book Four.<\/p>\n

The books were written in such a way that it spans a course of 10 weeks or so. It is fast paced and I pity the movie production which requires a lot of creative licences invocations. However with CGI and the latest movie making technology, I\u2019m sure the can hide the aging and differences.<\/p>\n

Here are my conclusions:<\/p>\n

  1. The movie and the book had a huge difference from the middle to the ending. In the movie, Simon was intoxicated in Magnus Bane\u2019s party and kidnapped to the vampires\u2019 den, Hotel Dumont. The Lightwoods, Clary and Jace rescued him. The book, however, saw Simon turned into a rat. Only Clary and Jace went in. On paper, they encountered Raphael, the acting in-command of the vampires outside the hotel. This was not the case in the movie. Even the ending was different, although the impression remains the same.<\/li>\n
  2. The books developed slowly. I have completed the first four books. I went from New York and ended up in Idris. Clary\u2019s mother, Jocelyn, went into a coma and woke up before me. I am not looking forward to reading the fifth book. In fact, I would just stop here. Probably I was expecting something in the class of J.K. Rowling\u2019s Harry Potter or Dan Brown\u2019s Langdon books.<\/li>\n
